“SPEBC, Content Analysis of Written Text and LISTENER: CCreative Ideas for a Real Automation of the Teaching-Learning Process”.

Ponente: Gabriela Aguilar
Lugar:
Salón Diego Bricio Hernández
Hora:
12:30 Hrs.

Abstract: The presentation will be about the development of SPEBC, the content analysis of written text and about LISTENER. SPEBC, an adaptive computer-based assessment system (Sistema Personalizado de Evaluación Basada en Computadora) will try to support teachers and learners in the solution of the following problems: The first one is about the low levels gathered by 15 years old Mexican students in reading literacy. The second problem is about the need of tools which help teachers to attend the class diversity that can be found in Mexican schools. SPEBC will try to support teachers and learners in the solution of these problems through the combination of an adaptive assessment system with a classroom communication system. Teachers and learners will be able to use SPEBC in the classroom and at home. In the classroom teachers will be able to request the generation of assignments and learners will use their voting systems to send the answers in. At home, learners will be able to answer a personalized assignment based on the not understood topics explained in the classroom. A first version of SPEBC was implemented and evaluated. This first version has a 23.9% of error, classified into syntax and semantic errors.

Furthermore, it will be introduced during the presentation, a proposal for a formative assessment of open-ended questions and essays using content analysis of written text. The proposed content analysis method is based on the idea that some written text such as an essay, open-ended question, etc. should include the answers of factual questions such as those of: what, how, etc. The formative assessment will be done through an automatic generation of factual questions about the points not included in the learnersanswers. When learners are answering open-ended questions or writing an essay, they may omit some information, even when they know the answer. Therefore, this proposal will help learners to improve the draft of a document and it will help them to gather a deeper understanding of the text that they are writing.

Moreover, during the presentation, a new personalized multimedia interface for ubiquitous learning called LISTENER will be presented. This interface will consist of headphones and microphone, and a special device to input the document to be read. LISTENER will consist of three main processes. These are SPEBC, the content analysis module and the Natural Language Processing Module. Students will be able to interact with LISTENER by inputting spoken text or by inputting a textbook, paper, etc and SPEBC will generate questions based on request in order to assess the students understanding levels. On other hand, the content analysis module will ask questions to the students about the omitted information in their answers. The Natural Language Processing Module will allow the input and output of data through the processing of speech synthesis and speech recognition, as an alternative media.
