Spring 2009 School in Probability and Statistics, CIMAT. Short description: We are currently organizing the 2009 Spring School in Probability and Statistics. This year's topic will be "Stochastic modeling and inference in science: applications to population genetics". The school is addressed to senior undergraduate/early graduate students interested in population genetics. With this event, we are trying to integrate various topics of stochastic modeling with statistical inference in science. Although the central topic will be the probabilistic theory of population genetics, we will also cover other themes, such as stochastic differential equations (SDE's) an their applications. Thus, one of our main objectives will be to illustrate basic probabilistic modeling notions and new approaches in the statistical analysis of stochastic processes. The school will include two main courses (in english), daily afternoon talks and a problem solving workshop. Confirmed participants: • Warren Ewens (University of Pennsylvania). Prof. Ewens will teach a one-week course in Mathematical Population Genetics (Lectures material to be posted here). • Paul Joyce (University of Idaho). Dr. Joyce will teach a one-week course on Stochastic computation in Evolutionary Genetics (Lectures material to be posted here). • Daniel Hernandez (CIMAT) will talk about the formal derivation of Stochastic Differential Equations. • Steve Krone (University of Idaho). Dr. Krone will talk about the Brownian-Bridge process to model animal movement. • Victor Pérez-Abreu (CIMAT) Dr. Perez-Abreu will talk about the Heuristics of Stochastic Differential Equations. • Ekaterina Todorova (CIMAT) Dr. Todorova will talk about Turbulence and stochastic Differential Equations. • Erick Treviño (CIMAT) Dr. Treviño will talk about Stochastic Differential Equations in Finance. Organizing committee: Miguel Nakamura, José Alfredo López-Mimbela and José Miguel Ponciano (ponciano@cimat.mx). To go to the School website (in spanish) click here.
