Science Outreach

The Center for Mathematics Research has extensive experience in the dissemination of mathematical sciences, focusing its efforts on popularizing formal fields through user-friendly language, both for non-specialized audiences and for emerging talents interested in STEM fields. CIMAT has a dedicated coordination team for the popularization of its activities, which strengthens ties between mathematical and computational topics, external academies at all levels, private initiatives interested in implementing mathematics in their activities, and the science and technology staff assigned to this public research center (SECIHTI).

The center’s Dissemination Coordination is responsible for coordinating, facilitating, and promoting activities aimed at bringing mathematics closer to diverse audiences, such as students at all levels, from elementary to high school, university and graduate levels, mathematics teachers, and the general public.

The Outreach Coordination, with the support of the Center’s science and technology staff, participates in hundreds of activities that involve presenting mathematical topics through engaging narratives. Topics covered range from algebra, topology, computational science, the relationship between mathematics and the natural sciences, and the fundamental role of women in STEM fields.

Currently, there are five outreach groups at the various CIMAT locations that organize numerous fairs and workshops:

Olympics

At CIMAT Guanajuato, state selection processes are carried out for various mathematics and computer olympics. Some of them are listed below:

Basic Education Mathematics Olympiad The Mexican Basic Education Mathematics Olympiad promotes the study of mathematics from a perspective that shows ingenuity and creativity as primary qualities and is aimed at students from 4th grade to 2nd grade of secondary school. The National contest, organized by a committee designated by the Mexican Mathematical Olympiad, takes place in June in different cities of our country. Delegations made up of nine students, from each of the States of the Republic, participate in this contest, who enjoy autonomy in their selection process.

In Guanajuato, it is organized by the Center for Research in Mathematics A.C. (CIMAT), in conjunction with the Department of Mathematics of the University of Guanajuato (DEMAT) and with the support of the Secretary of Education of Guanajuato. The responsibility of preparing students for the different stages falls on members of the CIMAT-DEMAT community.

Mathematics Olympiad in Guanajuato OMM The OMM Mexican Mathematics Olympiad is a program of the Mexican Mathematical Society (SMM), whose central part is the realization of the National Contest for pre-university students. This contest is the most important in our country at the high school level, just as the International Mathematical Olympiad is worldwide. The objective of the OMM is to promote the study of mathematics in a creative way, moving away from the traditional study that promotes memorization and mechanization, seeking and seeking to develop the reasoning and imagination of young people.

In Guanajuato, it is organized by the Center for Research in Mathematics A.C. (CIMAT), in conjunction with the Department of Mathematics of the University of Guanajuato (DEMAT) and with the support of the Secretary of Education of Guanajuato. The responsibility of preparing students for the different stages falls on members of the CIMAT-DEMAT community.Regional Computer Olympiad Guanajuato

It is a state contest for young people with the facility to solve practical problems through logic and the use of computers, which seeks to promote technological development in Mexico and find the best programmers in Guanajuato. After a selection process, the Guanajuato team is formed to attend the National Mexican Computer Olympiad Contest.

Special projects

Listed below are some projects that are special in the sense that they are current projects that have support from other institutions such as Conahcyt.

Recrea-matemáticas is in charge of developing the National Research and Advocacy Project for the Teaching of Mathematics, which arises in response to a call from the National Council of Humanities, Sciences and Technologies in mid-2019, with the specific objective of promoting the taste and appreciation for this discipline in both students and teachers.

Stem conferences for the state of Zacatecas. The objective of this initiative is to train high school and higher education students from the State of Zacatecas to make better use of the technological resources they already have to improve their employment opportunities. The activities will take place between 2021 and 2022.

Science Workshops

Every summer since 1997 CIMAT organizes the “Science Workshop for Youth” – a dense week of activities designed to bring high school students with an interest in natural sciences closer to the world of science. Around 40 students from high schools from all over the country participate in the Workshop. Workshops for high school students began in 1997 and later workshops are also organized for primary and secondary students. To see the details of these programs you can consult the following sites:

Visits

As part of the outreach activities, CIMAT offers a wide variety of conferences and workshops a year, either at the center’s facilities or in schools, museums, houses of culture, in addition to receiving groups from educational institutions starting at the baccalaureate level.
