Campus Mérida

In 2013, the A.C. Mathematics Research Center was selected by the Mixed Fund of CONAHCYT and the government of the state of Yucatán, to establish a research center, which would become its fourth foreign unit.
The Mérida unit of CIMAT is located in the Yucatán Science and Technology Park, to develop interdisciplinary projects in collaboration with other research centers, universities and companies.

Merida Unit Background

In 2013, the A.C. Mathematics Research Center was selected by the Mixed Fund of CONAHCYT and the government of the state of Yucatán, to establish a research center, which would become its fourth foreign unit.

The Mérida unit of CIMAT is built in the Yucatán Science and Technology Park, to develop interdisciplinary projects in collaboration with other research centers, universities and companies.

Currently the unit has seven researchers, five of whom are assigned to a Conahcyt Chairs project. Since its arrival in Yucatán, CIMAT has maintained an exchange and academic mobility program with the Faculty of Mathematics of the Autonomous University of Yucatán and both institutions are preparing to establish the first doctoral program in mathematics in this entity.

General objectives of the campus

Develop multidisciplinary projects, both research and networking, in collaboration with the institutions and companies installed in the Yucatán Science and Technology Park.

Consolidate the local educational offer at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Form academic networks to integrate the scientific and technological capabilities of the state of Yucatán.

Objectives associated with the project “Development of new capabilities in mathematics and scientific computing in the State of Yucatán”

Develop groups and lines of research in image processing; supercomputing and algebraic and differential geometry.

Carry out research, teaching and application of knowledge in collaboration with local institutions such as the Faculty of Mathematics of the Autonomous University of Yucatán (UADY), CINVESTAV, the Scientific Research Center of Yucatán, A.C. (CICY) and the Mexican Space Agency.

Establish doctoral programs in mathematics with impact in the southeast of the country, the Caribbean and Central

America in collaboration with the UADY.
Strengthen the academic and scientific link with the UADY.

Create a high-performance computing laboratory in collaboration with Cinvestav and UADY.

Human resources training

The staff of the Mérida Unit of the Cimat works together with the Autonomous University of Yucatán, one of the aspects in which they combine efforts is in the teaching of subjects to students of bachelor’s or master’s degrees in mathematics, and in order to establish a program doctorate in mathematics in this state of the country, Cimat researchers contribute their knowledge and experience in the development of the program, whose benefit will be directly for students in the southeast of Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America.

The doctoral program is envisioned to have broad potential for those interested in training in basic mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics or computing.
