In 1980, at a stage in which national development was pointing towards decentralization, a group of academics from UNAM found in the city of Guanajuato a propitious setting to found an institution dedicated to basic research in the field of mathematics and the growth of this science as an area of training at the higher education level. Thus, the CIMAT, Center for Research in Mathematics A.C., was born.
Since then, its academic activity has diversified and increased to make the Center the most important research institution in its specialty in the interior of the Mexican Republic. This is evidenced by the high academic level of its researchers; his vast peer-reviewed scientific production; its increasingly growing participation in the international scientific scene, with the organization of congresses, symposiums, seminars and workshops; and its bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs with recognition of international excellence.
CIMAT has also cemented a strong link with the various social sectors of the country, influencing projects aimed at contributing to the solution of problems, particularly those related to technological innovation. In order to extend the impact of all its substantive activities, CIMAT has also established foreign units in the cities of Aguascalientes, Mérida, Monterrey and Zacatecas, where it contributes to the development of competitiveness and growth of companies and organizations, to strengthen the mathematical competences of society in general and to satisfy the demand for human resources with a high professional and scientific profile.
The Centro de Investigación en Matemáticas AC is a public research center integrated into the CONAHCYT Public Centers System, dedicated to the generation, transmission and application of specialized knowledge in the areas of mathematics, statistics and computer science.
Oriented towards scientific research, the training of high-level human resources, the improvement of society’s mathematical competence, as well as support in solving problems that fall within its areas of interest, CIMAT seeks to contribute to scientific development and technology from Mexico.
To be a research center of excellence and scientific development pole in progressive consolidation, recognized nationally and internationally in its areas of specialization; strengthened in its convening capacity and in the integration of a critical mass in groups of high scientific performance, and be a model of efficiency and growth and social impact for other research centers.
The CIMAT is oriented towards the fulfillment of three fundamental objectives:
Generate scientific knowledge through research in the Center’s specialty areas.
Train excellent human resources in the Center’s specialty areas, at the undergraduate and postgraduate level.
Strengthen the link with the public, private and social sectors through the development of applied research projects, the offer of technological and consulting services, the delivery of training programs and the dissemination and dissemination of mathematics.
