In 1998, CIMAT opened its first external headquarters in the city of Aguascalientes in order to extend its substantive activities to that region, offer attention to problems related to applied mathematics, statistics and computer science, and increase competitiveness. of the social sectors.

In 1999, CIMAT identified Software Engineering as one of the priority lines of research, forming the Software Engineering Group (IngSoft). This group would establish a close collaboration with organizations in the state of Zacatecas and, by the year 2006, this would lead CIMAT to design and open the Master’s Degree in Software Engineering, from which a new master’s program oriented towards robotics will be developed. , human-computer interaction and software engineering itself, in addition to a program of this last discipline at the specialty level, projected to open in 2021.
